LAYING THE FOUNDATION STONE OF THE TRINITY WESLEYAN CHURCH.
This afternoon the foundation stone of the Trinity Wesleyan Church, Stuart street, was laid by the Rev. Thomas Buddie, Chairman of the Southern District of the New Zealand Wesleyan Methodist Church. The Rev. Thomas Buddie, the Rev. A. R. Fitchett, and other Wesleyan Ministers were present, and the Revs. Mr Williams (Baptist), and Johnstone (Independent), were also present. The stone was as usual slung on a temporary beam, over which were two banners, on one of which was inscribed, “Glory to God in the Highest, and on earth peace and goodwill towards men ” After prayer by the Rev. Mr Williams, the Rev. Mr Fitchett read 1 Chron., 27, and 1 Cor., chap. 3 from verse 9. He then read the following memorandum, which was afterwards deposited in a glass jar. In tne Year of Our Lord, < 'ne Thousand Eight Hundred and Sixty-Nine, being The Thirty-first Year of the Reign of Her Majesty Queen Victoria, Sir George Bowen being Governor of New Zealand, and His Honor James Macandrew, M.H.R , Superintendent of the Province Otago, This Foundation Stone was laid by The Rev. Thomas Buddle, Chairmail of the Southern District of New Zealand of the Australasian Wesleyan Methodist Church, of which the Rev W. L. Binks is President for the current year; the Rev. Alfred Robertson Fitchett being Superintendent of the Dunedin Circuit; the Rev, David M‘Nicoll, and Rev. Henry Bull, his colleagues in the Circuit; Messrs George Hindle and Char'es Duke being Circuit Stewards. The trustees of Church now jn course of erection are Messrs Ji M. Massey, Daniel Raynes, Wm. Henry Walker, Geo. Howell, George Hindle, Thomas Ferens, David Roberts H. J. Chapman, Albert Beck, and E. W. U. Wrep. The architect for the building is Robert Arthur Lawson, of Dunedin, under whose superintendence it is to be erected by Edward Wills U. Wren, contractor ; the amount of contract as signed for on June 7th, 1569, being L 2,475. LIST OF DOCUMENTS INSERTED IN SEALED JAR, AND ENCLOSED IN FOUNDATION STONE. 1. Minutes of the Fifteenth Annual Conference of the Wesleyan Methodist Church of Australasia. 2. Plan of the Dunedin Circuit of Wesleyan Methodist Church fqr current quarter. 8, Daily iPimea of this day’s date j Star of 24th inst. 4, Current coins of the realm, from one sovereign to half-enny. The trowel, mortar, mason’s hammer, mallet, and square were then handed to the Rev, Mr Buddie, who, after spreading the mortar, directed the stone to be lowered into its place. He then applied the usual tests, and striking the stone with the hammer declared, in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, the stone to be laid as a memorial stone. Those present then arranged themselves so that a photograph might be taken. The Rev Mr Buddie gave an address declaratory of the doctrines of Wesleyan ism and the safeguards to purity of preaching. Forty Sunday school scholars presented offerings amaunting to L 43 13s 3d. By desire of the Rev Mr Fitchett a verse of the Mational Anthem was sung and the usual benediction naving been pvonoanced by the Rev Mr Buddie the ceremony was brought to a close.
