(from our own correspondents.) Christchurch, Wednesday. Gold has been discovered in the ranges near Timaru. The ground is limited, but it will pay for sluicing. A prospecting claim has been taken out, and an applicrtion has been lodged with the Government for the reward. A rush to the place is not advisable until further news is received.
Wellington, Wednesday. The Defence Estimates passed without opposition. Mr McLean stated that in addition to one regiment, the commissioners would raise an addition to the permanent local force, from discharged Imperial soldiers and other sources, armed according to the most approved method. The Constabulary’s permanent strength is to be 600, to bo remodelled as a superior civil police force by Mr Branigan. Only » small number of Natives are to
be employed as guides, but when necessary it is pvdposed to employ large number, to be engaged temporarily. L 150,000 was voted for defence with a contingent vote of L 50,000.
