CITY COUNCIL.

Tins Day. The City Council held an adjourned meeting at the Council Rooms, new Post Office, this afternoon at three o’clock. Present— Mr Griffin, in the chair, Messrs Fish, Wilkinson, Walter, Cods, M'Glashan, Fhoneman, and Simpson. Mr A. K. Smith was also present. Mr Simpson asked several questions of Mr Smith, who repln-d that with regard to the statement in the Daily Times as to the dividend declared by the Melbourne Gas Company, lr* did not say that 121 per cent, diyi dend was dec ared, but that the profits were I2i pur cent, and on his return to Melbourne *i e should transmit documentary evidence to bear out his statement. The questions put to Mr Smith were based upon the report published in the Daily Times, and Mr Smith’s replies were only confirmatory and exp ; anatory of his figures. The Council had not risen at four o'clock.
