This Day. (Before Janies pulton, Esq., R.M.) PETTY OFFENCES. Joseph Davis, neglecting to keep a light burning at his hotel, was lined fs (id and costs.—B. Jones, for allowing a chimney to take lire, having only been in the house a fortnight, was fined ss.—Thomas Paveltieh, for a like offence, was fined I 1 is and costs.— Thomas Hughes, leaving his horse and cab so as to have no control over them, was fined 40s and costs.—A charge against Samuel Pack ham, neglecting to keep a light burning at a hoarding in Manse Street, was dismissed. BREACH OF THE KEROSENE OIL ORDINANCE. William Gregg was charged by Inspector Nimou with having a greater quantity of kerosene oil on his premises than was allowed bylaw—namely, 48 gallons. Mr Gregg said that he was a dealer in kerosene. Mr Seanlan was called, and proved thas he had bought a large quantity of kerosene at four different times. When he purchased it was delivered at his store. Mr Ward said he knew Mr Gregg had dealt largely in it. Mr ( Teeth proved that Mr Gregg had bought largely of Meg-rs Bates, Sise, and Co. He bought for the purpose of selling again. The The Inspector said Mr Gregg, when'asked about the kerosene on the premises, said he had none. The ease was dismissed. STAGNANT FOOLS. The adjourned case of Mr Gotten, for allowing drainage to accumulate on his property, was called. MrCutteu said he bad put himself in communication witji the Corporation to co-operate with him to abate the nuisance, but had received no answer. The case was dismissed on Mr Cuttcn promising to press the Corporation to immediate action. Charles Hunter was called. Mr Smith, from Messrs Gillies and Street, appeared on his behalf, and stated means would lie taken to remove the nuisance. The case was adjourned. INFORMATIONS BV INSPECTOR NIMON. Thefol owingfinea were inflicted :—William Park, allowing water to flow op to the footway in High and Grant streets, 2s fid and costs. George Sisc, a similar charge*. (Mr Ward appeared for Mr iSise.) For the defence, Mr Hardy was called, who said the Corporation were to blame for not clearing the drains.—The Inspector said the intention of leave to lay drains into the sidedrains was that storm water only should be allowed to run through them. Mr L’Ensign was called, who sa d he observed no nuisance in the drain that could be traced as coining from Mr Sise’s house ; fined 2s fid and costs. James Cunningham, on a similar charge, 2s fid and costs ; John« Roberts, driving a dray without address, Is and costs ; John Leckie, leaving a cab in a public place, dismissed ; Edward M‘Eweu, driving a dray wiihout name on, Is and costs; Matthew Millar, for a like charge, Is ; Michael Levy, dirty premises, 10s and costs; J. L, Gadsby,

wheeling a truck along a footpath, pleaded that, being unable to push his truck through the imtd oh the road, lie took it a short distance on the footpath—fined 2a 6d ; James Black, diiving across the footpath, 5s and coats. INFORMATIONS BV THE TOWN BELT EANGEE. On the information of the Town Belt Ranver, lines were inflicted, on Frederick Barton, horse wan lering, 2s 6d and costa ; Mrs M‘Ewan, allowing two cows to wander, Is tach and costs ; James Wilson, allowing two cows to wander, Is each and costs. (Before A. Chetham-Strode, Esq., R.M.) OBTAINING MONEY UNDER FALSE PRETENCES. J.'im Patterson Dent, alias Anderson, alias Teviot, and Thomas Leslie, were charged, on remand, with having, at Dunedin, on the 2Sth ult., obtained the sum of L 3 IQs from one Jacob Seegar by means of a valueless cheque. Mounted-constable B‘ aven having deposed to the arrest of Dent, Chief Detective Thomson applied for a remand until Thursday, which was granted. ALLEGED LIBEL. The case of Maclean v. Heuningham- -on the application of -Mr Barton, with the consent of Mr Macassey—was adjourned to Tuesday next, at noon. Mr Barton and Mr James Smith were defendant’s counsel.
