THE TAIERI ELECTION.
The election of a member to represent the Taieri district in the General Assembly, in the room of Mr D. Reid, resigned, took place on Saturday; and, as will be seen from the returns which are given below, resulted in the return of Mr Henry Howorth. It was generally known that the contest would be between Messrs Howorth, Culling, and Murray, but it was never anticipated that the first-named gentleman would be returned by such a large majority. Mr Rennie, the Government candidate, cut a very sorry figure, and the returns as furnished to us, by some mistake, do not show the number of votes polled by Mr Sibbald. Returns have to be received from the Waipori, but it is known that Mr Howorth had a small majority in that district. The following are the votes polled by the candidates at the four principal polling booths;—
