The Evening Star. DUNEDIN, TUESDAY, DEC. 19, 1865. PROVINCIAL COUNCIL.

The Council met to-day at 12 noon

The Speaker and the Chairman of Committees being absent, Mr Wm. Stevenson (Taieri) upon the motion of the Provincial Treasurer took the chair.

The Provincial Treasurer stated that, before the Council proceeded to business, he wished to announce that, in consequence of the adverse vote yesterday, the Executive had thought it "proper to at once place their resignations in the hands of his Honor the Superintendent, recommending at the same time that his Honor should communicate with the hon. member for the Gold Fields (Mr Brodie) as the Chairman of the Select Committee upon Education.

Mr Bkodie thereupon informed the House that he had been entrusted by his Honor with the task of forming a Ministry, and had been endeavoring to do so. He had not completely succeeded in filling up his list, the time at his disposal having been short. Negotiations were proceeding, and he hoped to be able to complete his arrangements by noon to-morrow, until which time he moved the adjournment of the House. The motion was seconded by Mr J. CBrown ('Lawrence).

Mr Renmb begged the leave of the House to explain that he did not, during the debate upon the Ediication Bill yesterday use the expression imputed to him by a report in one of the daily papers—viz., "that it would be well if the House could be induced to leave people to educate their own children as they fed their own cattle." All he had stated was, that "he hoped the day -was not far distant when parents would see that it was as much their privilege to find education for their children as it was their duty to provide food for their cattle." Mr Hatjghton agreed with Mr Rennie, -who, he stated, had not used the expression in question ; and the report of his (Mr Haughton's) remarks on the same subject omitted a portion of them, which entirely altered the meaning of the subsequent expression, which, in the heat of debate, he had made. Mr Gleeron corroborated Mr Rennie, who, he said, had not \ised the expression -which Mr Haughton was reported as endorsing, but had merely started that '' parents were bound to provide their children with food for the mind as -well as for the body." Mr Dillon Bell (Matau), who had just entered the house, said that the question he was about to ask might have been rendered unnecessary by v/hat had previously taken place. Before the motion for adjournment was put, he -wished to know whether the hon. member for the Gold Fields (Mr Brodie) was in a position to state that he would probably succeed in the formation of a Ministry ? Mr Brodie replied that, for the information of the House and the hon. member who had asked the question, he might state that, if a request for an adjournment was made by any member situated as he was, it might be presumed that he had a reasonable chance of performing the task entrusted to him. He might further state that if a Ministry was formed be-t-ween that time and the hour of assembling to-morrow, the Government would be prepared to proceed with the business without any further adjournment. The motion was then carried, and the House adjourned iintil to-morrow at noon.
