Wellington.—The Independent of the 25th ult. reports :—“Business during the week has been dull, and there is no change in the wholesale markets to report, which still remain firm for all staple goods at quotations last given. The non-arrival of the English mail has, doubtless, increased the stagnation. In the retail markets there has been a rice in prices. Bread has risen to 7d the 21b loaf, in consequence of the state of the Australian flour market and the increased price of flour. The city butchers have also raised their prices, and meat may now be quoted as follows :—Beef, prime cuts, 8d per lb ; rump steaks, lOd do ; steaks, 9d do ; other cuts, 5d to 7d do. Mutton, hind-quarters, legs, loins, chops, 8d per lb ; fore-quarters, 5d do ; shoulders, 7d do.” Auckland. —The Southern Cross of the 18th ult. reports : —‘"The most important item of commercial news during the last week has been the great rise in the price of flour. Last week the importers’ price of Chilian was quoted at £l9. per ton ; this week it is £24. The retail price, (per 1001b) which has been for some time standing at £2l, is now £2B.
