The Evening Star. DUNEDIN, THURSDAY, NOV. 23, 1865.

In the Provincial Council this afternoon, The Speaker took the chair at 2 o’clock, Mr Maddock asked the Government—“ Whether it is a fact, as reported in the Tuapelca Recorder of 27th October, that a police constable named Bruen was suddenly dismissed from the service, and with his wife and three young children turned out of doors late at night ? If so, by whose orders this was done ?”

The Provincial, Secretary replied that nothing of the kind as reported had occurred. The course adopted by the Commissioner of Police had been approved of by the Government ; and the correspondence on the subject had been sent to Tuapeka, to be placed at the disposal of any one interested in the matter. Mr Blair withdrew the question standing in his name, relating to scholarships in connection with the High School, the Government having anticipated his question by placing resolutions on the subject on the table. In reply to Mr Street, The Provincial Treasurer stated that the Government hoped in a few days to complete arrangements with the owners of property on the Main Road, North-east Valley, that would enable the desired improvements in the road to be effected. Capt. Mackenzie moved —“That an address be presented to his Honor the Superintendent, to the effect that he may be pleased without delay to take such steps as may be necessary to render the passage of the Clntha, at Clutha Ferry, safe for life and property.” After some discussion the motion was carried ;|n the affirmative*

Mr Grant rose to move—“ That the Standing Order No 5 he amended so as to enable the Council to meet at 10 a.m. daily but there not being the required number of members present, the motion fell through. Mr Isaacs rose to move—“ That in the opinion of this Cotincil, the'fee now charged for publicans’ Licenses is excessive, and should be reduced but at the request of the Government, withdrew it until the new Licensing Bill in preparation came on for discussion. Mr Haxjghton moved—“ That a respectful address be presented to his Excellency the Governor, praying him to amend the Regulations of the Otago Goldfields with regard to mining leases, so far as to reduce the amount payable as rent ; and that his Excellency will be further pleased to authorise the remission of the present rates of rental to the present leaseholders.”— Carried in the affirmative. A debate ensued, when it was ultimately agreed to by the mover to adjourn the discussion until Tuesday next —“ That an address be presented to his Honor the Superintendent, requesting that he will be pleased to reserve from sale, and set aside for public uses for the township of Milton, rural section 148, block XVIII, and 149, 150, 151, 152, block XIX, Tokomairiro district. ”
