Information has been received by the police that a young man named Hutchinson, who acted as Mr Proudfoot’s clerk on the Dunedin Jetty, has absconded, after having forged his- employers name to several cheques which he managed to get "'cashed at various hotels in towbi last night. It has been ascertained that he left Dunedin by the Molyueux coach early this morning. Miss Edith Palmerston’s engagement is drawing to a close,_ To-night, we notice that she will introduce into her entertainment a new “ local” song. The theatre was well attended last evening, and the audience were evidently well pleased. The City Council held its usual meeting this afternoon, but at an hour too late to permit us to report the proceedings. Considerable excitement was caused in Princes-street this forenoon by the entry of the cavalcade of the Californian Circus with their stud and brass band. Their first performance is announced to take place tomorrow night, and from the popularity of the entertainment we expect the Theatre will be crammed. The proceedings at the Police Court this morning were not particularly important, A man named Barnahy Leslie was fined 40s for violently assaulting Constable Barry. The civil cases comprised the following judgments for the plaintiffs, viz. :—Phillips, Parsons, and Co. v. John Aylmer, £l2 8s 9d for meat; Jno. Bunce v. C. G. Ross (by consent) £2 14s 4d for labor. The claim of Francis Broomley v. G. Keightonof £l7, value of horse, was dismissed, the evidence showing that it had been really sold to a Mr Cotton. S. Hutchison, who claimed from Jno. Griffen (as trustee in the estate of Jno. Hogan) £lO 4s for gas, was nonsuited, proof of contract for supply being wanting. Key and Berwick’s trustees recovered, by default £l2 11s from Jas. Kirkland, and £1 from James Watson for furniture ; and Shepherd obtained, in like manner, a verdict against A. W. Palmer for £1 10s, There were no appearances in Fowler and Co. v. Alex. M'Kenzie, and Ketterer v. Jessie Brooker. In the adjourned watch case of Rudd v. Levy, the Magistrate gave judgment for the plaintiff in the sum
of £lO and costs, at the same time commenting severely upon tlie evidence of tlie defendant and Ms witnesses.
It is announced in another column that the next Civil and Criminal Sessions of the Supreme Court will commence‘.on EViday, the first of December next.
The Dunstan Times of the 18th inst. says : “The greait water race of the Scandinavian Company at Dunstan Creek, was opened with much ceremony on the 7th inst. It was named by Mrs Lengley, one of the shareholders, who acquitted herself in a manner Mghly satisfactorily. Mr A. D, Harvey (officer in charge) delivered an ode expressly for the occasion. The proceedings wound up with a banquet at the Montezuma Hotel. The race carries between 30 and. 40 'beads of water, and when quite finished will cost about £IO,OOO.
