Commercial.

“Evening Star” Office, 4.80 pm. Tlse total amount of i-evenne coiiecied at tbo Customs to-day amounted to *' i r /3 l.e. The result of the sale by Messrs M ‘Landress, Hepburn and (Jo., this day, of the cargo of sugars ex Emma, must go far to negative the idea that commerce in this province is in a languishing state. It has not often occurred lately that a whole cargo of sugar could be disposed of in about an hour to eager competitors at auct.on. To-day every bag was soM, and the prices obtained must be satisfactory to the importers, notwithstanding that it is likely that .the sugars being selected at the opening of the season in the Mauritius ranged high in price as they usually do at that period. We summarize the sale thus :—IOO bags of a very line grained white crystal brought £45 7s 6d per ton. This sample appeared rather more moist than it should, bat the weather probably had something to do with this. The other fine white crystals ranged from £42 to £43, a very good medium white brought*£3S 10s. Some 000 bags of fine yellow crystals brought £3O 5s to £36 15s. The counter sugars were a very good selection, and brought proportionately high prices. The first qualities were knocked down at from £35 10s to £3O 5s ; the seconds from £33 to £33 15s ; medium yellow crystals brought £34 10s to £35, and 114 bags of good yellow fetched £3l. Altogether the sale was one of the best which has taken place in Dunedin for ys.ars.
