LATEST INTER-PROOVINCIAL NEWS.

We regret to learn that a fatal accident happened on Saturday last at the Waimea. It appears that a miner, by name William Andrews, was engaged in felling a tree by means of girthing it from the roots instead of cutting it with an axe. Having left work for a few minutes to quench his thirst, the deceased was about returning, when suddenly the tree fell and brought down with it another in close proximity. The deceased, seeing the impending danger, jumped into a tail-race, but was too late to escape the crash. The body of the deceased, when recovere 1, presented a deplorable condition, the head being almost severed from the trunk.— West Coast Times, Nov. 11. Three dead bodies have been picked up on the beach during the past week, two of which, were found near the Terroaakau, and one near the Saltwater Creek. In all probability one of them is the body of the unfortunate owner of the -Hose of Sanclridge, and perhaps the poor fellow who was lost in the Sarah the other day may be one of the remaining two. They will, however, most likely be identified at the inquest. — lbid. The body of Captain Sleigh, who was drowned in this harbor on Friday week last while coming from the s. s. Phoebe in a waterman’s boat, was discovered yesterday afternoon at 4 oclock, on the beach, between Captain Kennedy’s house and the Swimming Paths.— Weilimjton Jnde~ 2 endent, 14th Nov.

TilE Ma KLBOKOUGH Sl3 PE RIN TENDENCY. We learn by our Nelson liles tliat Mr .Eyes has been returned as Superintendent for the Province of Marlborough. Gold at Wangerei. —The Hew Zealand Herald of the Sth instant says : —‘ ‘ A gentleman who anived by the Tasmanian Maid last night from Wangarei, called at our office, and produced a'specimen of gold-bearing quartz, which had been found on land purchased by Mr White from the natives. The specimen in question is an exceedingly rich one. We raider stand that Mr White has succeeded in purchasing for the Government several large and valuable tracts of lands in this district. Intelligence has also been received by the arrival of the same vessel, of an extensive coal-field having been discovered at Wangarei Heads. The North. — “ A report has reached town” (says the New Zealand Her add. of the Sth inst.) “ that a rather serious disturbance respecting a land question, is likely to take place amongst the natives in the neighborhood of Hokianga, The particulars have not transpired, but such measures as appeared most advisable have been taken by the agent of the General Government in Auckland, for averting any serious consequences from these threatened disturbances.” Housing the Mail.— The Taranaki Herald of the 4th inst. says :—A Maori mailman arrived in town on Thursday, from the South. He was sent up from Oeo on Monday, by some friemdy disposed Ngatiruanuis with a packet of letters—which being of a suitable size, he put into his boot. On his w y up he called at Opunake, and was entrusted with another mail from the camp there. This one being larger, he put it inside his shirt and started for town, but at Tipoka he fell in with a party of the enemy, who searched him and found the Opunake mail, which they took away, but as they Gid not take off his boots, the other one escaped detection, and was delivered safely at the Native Office. They told the mailman that if they caught him carrying a mail again, they should take away his horse and all his clothes. It is si pposed that several cheques on the Bank of Zealan I here, were being forwarded by tie Opunake mail; if so, it is just possible that the natives may attempt to pass them in Whanganui. -
