HEIDELBERG, December 21
General George S. Patton died peacefully at 9.50 p.m. His medical officers issued the following bulletin shortly before the general's death: "A pulmonary complication resulting in the accumulation of secretions in the lungs is embarrassing General Patton's respiration.
"The paralysis resulting from the injury to his spinal cord has made it difficult to get rid of the secretions. The general's heart is embarrassed as the result of the pulmonary congestion."
General George Patton, who was commander of the American 15th Army, had been seriously ill for a fortnight following a collision between his car and an army lorry. The crash left him partly paralysed.
From the start, General Patton had no illusions about the seriousness of his condition. He said to the American soldiers who brought him to hospital: "This is a helluva way to have to die."
