SWITCH TO "JETS"
ROYAL AIR FORCE PILOTS
The Royal Air Force has begun a big ?witch-over from airscrew-driven fighters to "jets," and all pilots not due for early demobilisation are being trailed to fly them. Learning is proving easier than the instructors at first thought, and the trainees say that 'squirts" are ehvpler to h:>ndle than perrol-driven planes, 8s tbu*t are fewer'instruments to waici and fewer controls to manipulate.' They are also inucn more pleasant to fly because of the absence of vibration, which is usually found in. propel-lor-driven aircraft.
lr the last year oi ihe war a lavge number of Luftwaffe pilots were killed whiic learning to f!> jet planes, but training losses v/ith the Royal Air F/im have not been higher than with any other type of aircraft. Before pilots are allowed to take up a meteor thy must have experience in a fast, twin-engine aircraft, and for this purpose it is necessary to send Spitfire and Typhoon pilots on Mosquito "training courses. This is the only special training required.
