THE MAREO CASE

APPEAL MOTION FILED

An extension of time to apply for leave to appeal is sought in a motion which has been filed at the office of the Court, of Appeal in Wellington on behalf of Eric Mareo, aged 53, musician, who is at present serving a life sentence after two trials for the murder of his wife. The motion is based on the grounds that the Criminal Appeal Amendment Act became law on December 7 and the right of appeal only then became available by virtue of the Act. The procedure now is that the- present motion will come before the -Court of Appeal. If the extension of time is granted, application to appeal will then be made, and if this succeeds, the appeal itself will be heard. The motion is not likely to come before the Court of Appeal until March next.
