DR. E. P. ELLISON, 0.8. E.

The Chief Medical Officer in the Cook Islands, Dr. E. P. Ellison, 0.8. E., is retiring on superannuation, and with Mrs. Ellison will be returning to New Zealand by the Maui Pomare which is due to arrive at Auckland on Christmas Day.

"Dr. Ellison's very many friends will hear with regret that he expressed a wish to retire for health reasons," said the Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser), "and they all wish, as I do, that his return to New Zealand will quickly restore him to full health. During his long years of faithful work among the people of the Cook Islands he has been not only their doctor but by his considerate and patient manner he has been affectionately regarded by the people as one of themselves. Over the past twenty-six years he has laboured among the Islands people who are in the care of the New. Zealand Administration. They, as well as his numerous »friends throughout New Zealand, will join with me fin doing honour to the work he has done, and in extending to Mrs. Ellison and himself the best of wishes for their future."

] Dr. Edward Pohau Ellison was born at Portobello, Dunedin, 6*l years ago. He graduated at Otago University. From 1919 to 1922 he was medical officer at Niue, being also Resident Commissioner in the latter part of that time. Early in 1923 he was appointed Magistrate and medical officer in the Chatham Islands. In August,- 1925, he returned to Dunedin for a post-graduate course in surgery, during which time he spent a month each at the Makogai Leper Hospital in Fiji and Western Samoa. For the succeeding two years he was Chief Medical Officer in Rarotonga. From August, 1927, until December, 1930, he was director of the division of Maori hygiene of the Health Department in New Zealand, and he then relieved as medical officer in Niue for a short period. Since March, 1931, he has been Chief Medical Officer and Deputy Resident Commissioner of the Cook Islands.
