DEATH ON SERVICE

LIEUT. G. D. INNS, R.N.V.R,

Official news has been received of the death of Lieutenant G. D. Inns, R.N.V.R-, who had been posted missing since shortly after the fall of Singapore. ■ Lieutenant Inns, who was a member and for a time vice-commo-dore of the Port Nicholson Yacht Club, went overseas early in 1940. Having obtained his master's certificate, before leaving Wellington, he was almost immediately given .command of a coastal vessel for work on the Malayan coast. After the fall of Singapore, while operating oft' Batavia, his boat was' sunk by a Japanese destroyer, Eighteen men, including Liexitenant Inns, got away in a lifeboat, but after three and a half weeks at sea only two survived. These two reached Java, where they became prisoners of war. Lieutenant Inns was educated at Wellington and Wairarapa Colleges. He was a son of Mrs. E. J. Inns (Roseneath) and a brother of Mrs. Tansley (Eastbourne) and Mrs. McVeagh (Auckland).

The practice by the Lower Hutt City Council of appointing employees otherwise than at an ordinary meeting was strongly condemned at a meeting'of the committee of the Lower Hutt Ratepayers' Association recently. One speaker said that certain appointments had "been made recently by the finance committee of the council. All important business of the council should be conducted in open meeting. It was resolved to ask the council why the appointments had been made otherwise than ?.t an ordinary meeting of the council.. ■■ . . ,
