DEALER FINED £200

EVASION OF SALES TAX P.A. AUCKLAND, December 7. Three charges of failing to include taxable goods which he had sold, amounting to £1768 12s lid, in his monthly returns to the Collector of Sales Tax with intent to defraud of revenue, were preferred against Albert Francis Cantwell, wine and spirits dealer, before Mr. J. Morling, S.M. The defendant pleaded guilty. The Magistrate said the defendant knew he was liable for sales tax and that he had to furnish correct returns. Even if he had not deliberately evaded payment, he had been so grossly negligent that it amounted to evasion, and it was a case for a very substantial penalty. Fines totalling £200 were im posed.
