PUBLIC DEBATING

PARLIAMENTARY SHIELD

The concluding debate of the season for the Parliamentary Challenge Shield, under the auspices of the Wellington Union of Public Speaking Societies, was held on Thursday evening in the Commercial Travellers' Hall. The subject was "That the Government's policy of fostering secondary industries is in the best interests of New Zealand." The Leonine Club took the affirmative while the Wellington 22 Club negated the proposition. The audience, which closely followed the arguments put forward, was provided with bright debating of a high standard. The judge, in according the decision to the Wellington 22 Club, attributed their success to a more aggressive approach to the subject, together' with slightly better team work. The shield was presented in 1910 and, except for the war years, has been competed for annually ever since.
