MCVAY COURT-MARTIAL
NEW YORK, December 5. Evidence was given at the courtmartial of Captain McVay, commander of the heavy cruiser Indianapolis, j which was sunk in the Philippines Sea lon July 30, by the ship's bugler, Donald !Mock, that he was on the bridge when the vessel was struck but did not receive orders to sound the call to abandon ship. He was finally ordered over the side. i Ensign Woolston, the sole surviving officer of the cruiser's damage control section, said that he radioed the drder !to abandon ship from the communica- ! tions bridge. The radio man, Moran. gave evidence I that he received the message on July 2!) that a Japanese submarine would cross the cruiser's path at about 8 a.m. next day. Later he received a niessago that a Uniietl States .merchantman had been sunk by two torpedoes about 300 miles from the Indianapolis"* position. M
