HASTINGS DOCTOR
OPERATION ON PRINCESS P.A. HASTINGS, This Day. A former Hastings man had a personal interest in the appendicitis operation recently performed on Princess Margaret Rose. He is Alan Small, F.R.C.S.. son of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Small, Hastings, who was chosen by Sir Lancelot Barrington, ward surgeon to his Majesty, as his assistant for the operation. Small was educated at the Havelock North School, Napier Boys' High School, and Otago University, being a nominee for a Rhodes Scholarship in 1931. He went to England after qualifying in 1933, gaining experience in hospitals in that country and being admitted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, and subsequently entering practice in Harley Street. During the war Dr. Small was officer commanding an R.A.F. hospital. He married Dr. Christine McGillivray, and they have two sons.
