DUNEDIN STRIKE
STATEMENT REFUSED
"NO BUSINESS OF PUBLIC" P.A. DUNEDIN, November 30. No work was done on the wharves or in the docks at Port Chalmers today as a result of the strike of the Port Chalmers waterside workers, whose decision to cease work on Thursday afternoon was apparently brought about by the failure of the authorities in Wellington to accede to thendemand for an improvement in rates of pay and conditions of work in the docks, which would bring them into line with conditions and wages attaching to work on the wharves.
An unequivocal refusal to discuss the strike or its causes was made today by the president of the Port Chalmers Watersiders' Union (Mr. W. D. Campbell), who said: "I have nothing to say to the 'Otago Daily Times' or any other paper in New Zealand — least of all the 'Daily Times.' This is no business of the , 'Times' or the public."
Meantime, work on two vessels is held up. The overseas vessel Glenogle, which should be loading a large quantity of wool for United Kingdom ports, may have to leave the port without a major part of her cargo if the strike continues. An overhaul on the coastal vessel Storm has also come to a halt.
Victoria University College's two nominees for Rhodes Scholarships. Both are 25 years old and both have served overseas with the Royal New Zealand, Navy for more than four years, ivith the rank of lieutenant. They were overseas when they entered theii applications.
