VISIT TO WARSHIPS

The visiting aircraft-carrier, H.M.S. Indefatigable, and her escorting destroyers were open to the public for the first time yesterday afternoon, and thousands of Wellingtonians. inspected them.

It is estimated that some 7000 people went on board the aircraft-carrier alone and many others were unable to board her as time did not permit. The visitors were conducted on a denned route through the ship, boarding her forward and coming off aft through the quarter deck. The visit was very well organised and the officers and men of the ship are to be complimented on the excellent and polite way in which they handled the huge crowd. The ship was again open today from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. It was the first occasion on which the vessels had been open for inspection, and an officer of H.M.S. Wizard said: I've never seen so many people on the ship before." Parties of officers and men left the ship yesterday and again this morning on excursions out of Wellington, and some of the men will be away as long as three days. Tomorrow the personal guests of the members of the ships' companies will be entertained on the ships, which will not be open to the general public.
