EXTRA BUTTER

PROVISION FOR WORKERS

Would the Minister of Industries and Commerce state why additional butter rations were not available for casual labourers employed in harvesting, haymaking, or shearing? asked Mr. W. A. Sheat (National. Patea).

The Minister (Mr. Sullivan) said that farm workers qualified for an extra butter allowance in the same wsy as other workers if they were required to take two sandwich meals to work with them each day. and numerous cases of that nature had already been met. He appreciated that the circumstances were somewhat different where a farmer's wife was required to provide meals for gangs of casual workers, and he had now authorised the release of butter in such cases at the equivalent rate allowed for restaurants nroviding main meals The issue of the extra butter would be made at the discretion of local rationing officers who were aware of the peculiar local conditions in each case.
