FINE OF £100
PETONE GAMING CHARGES
Thomas James Belsham, sheet-metal worker, of Petone, was fined £100 when he appeared before Mr. ,H. J. Thompson, S.M., in the Petone Court yesterday, charged with carrying on business as a bookmaker. In evidence, Detective F. Gordon said that the accused had been operating on a large scale in a hotel bar. He had previously been convicted for a similar offence, when he had been fined £25, and had claimed afterwards that he had devised a new method of betting which precluded the possibility of him being caught with betting material in his possession. Charged with publicly exhibiting a "Four Square Betting Card" and disposing of tickets in a lottery, Thomas Pohio Rickus, barman, of Petone, pleaded guilty, was convicted on both charges, and fined a total of £6. For publishing a double chart which contained a notification as to the betting on a certain horse race, Casey Burton, of Petone, was fined £5. ST. ANDREWS DAY CELEBRATIONS. Local Scots will celebrate their national Saints' Jia.v tomorrow by a concert in Hr1 Town Hall, with a dunce to follow in the same hall. There will he a full parade of all the pipe bands through the city to the hall. A feature of the concert will be the sinjjin;: of tile Wellington College Choir and the choir from the children's homes. The entire net proceeds will <;o to the upkeep of the homes. It was reported at last night's meeting of the Wellington Harbour Board that in connection with the reclamation at the Evans Bay Yacht Club all the piles for the retaining wall round the reclamation had been driven. Nearly 1000 cubic yards of spoil had been received, bringing the total to close on half the total fill required for the reclamation.
