TENNIS UPSET

PAILS BEATS BROMWICH

SYDNEY, November 25

Dinny Pails caused the biggest tennis upset for many years when he beat the Australian Davis Cup star, John Bromwich, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 in the final of the New South Wales singles championship yesterday. By his win Pails has virtually gained a place in Australia's Davis Cup team next year.

Pails played a superb all-court game. He was severe from the outset and never allowed Bromwich to settle down to his usual steady game. Pails's terrific service was a big factor in his win.

After the match Bromwich said: "No player in the world would have beaten Pails today." Crawford commented: "Pails played marvellously. I don't think any player anywhere could have played better." Other finals resulted: Women's singles, Mrs. Bolton (formerly Miss Nancy Wynne) beat Mrs Hopman. 6-3, 6-3; men's doubles, Brodie and Harper defeated Crawford and Pails, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4; women's doubles. Misses J. Fitch and M. Bevis defeated Mesdames Hopman and Long, 6-2, 6-3. The mixed doubles final, unfinished because of fading light, stands, Bromwich and Miss Fitch versus Long and Mrs. Bolton. 6-3, 4-6, 7 all.
