CHRISTMAS RATIONS

RELAXATION IN BRITAIN

LONDON. November 14. The Minister of Food, Sir Ben Smith, announced extra rations for Christmas in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, and for the New Year for Scotland, of lib of sugar, 4oz of sweets, 6oz of butter and margarine of which not more than 4oz can be taken as butter, sixpennyworth of carcass meat, and fourpennyworth of canned corned beef. The Minister explained that the addition was possible because Britain had done more than was necessary to meet the Washington Agreement stipulating that Britain should reduce the consumption -of certain essential foodstuffs to agreed levels. "The result is that I have a little food m hand," he added. ' Gift parcels from abroad up to lilt) were exempted from import licences, the Minister stated. They must not contain more than 71b of food. The weight of an entire parcel has hitherto been limited to 51b.
