BRITISH SCIENTISTS
TALK IN HOUSE OF COMMONS
LONDON, November 14. The atomic energy experts, Professors Marcus L. Oliphant and Sir James Chadwick, spoke to 100 members of the House of Commons at a private meeting in the House of Commons. They answered many questions. The meeting was arranged, by the New Common Wealth Parliamentary Group to explore the potentialities of atomic energy in peace and war. The Press Association says it learnt that many anxieties were expressed regarding the atomic bomb as a weapon of war. unless some method of world control was agreed on and effectively carried out.
Speakers said that the challenge of atomic energy to coal would inevitably lead to opposition to its development by the vested interests likely to be endangered. This opposition would have to be taken into account.
There was some discussion also concerning sharing the secrets with Russia. The view appeared general that Britain knew practically all there was to be known about the atom and it was useless to try to keep it secret from other countries.
