OPEN VERDICT
AGED WIDOW'S DEATH
P.A. AUCKLAND, November 14. "Apparently police inquiries cannot take this matter any further," said the city Coroner, Mr. Addison, when he concluded an inquest into the death of Mrs. Emily Jane Burgess, aged 79, widow, of Birkenhead, who was found lying unconscious on the side of the road about ten minutes after she had left home on August 15. She was removed to Auckland Hospital and died on August 17. Detective-Sergeant Kearney said he made an examination of the roadway where Mrs. Burgess was found injured, but there was no evidence to indicate how she was hurt. A thorough search was made in the locality for any instrument that might have been used to inflict the injury on Mrs. Burgess's head, but none was found. Cuts in her hat corresponded with ones on her head. A .house-to-house canvass was made in the locality, and approximately 400 persons had been interviewed.
A verdict that Mrs. Burgess's death was caused by a fracture of the skull and cerebral hemorrhage and that there was insufficient evidence to show how she received the fatal injuries was returned by the Coroner.
