TENNIS

LEAGUE AFFILIATES

The application of the Wellington Lawn Tennis League for affiliation to the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association was granted at this week's meeting of the management committee of the association. This will go a long way towards consolidating organised tennis in Wellington, and will mean an increase of between 600 and 700 in the membership of the Wellington Association.

Congratulations were extended to the Talavera Club on being the first club to complete its quota of £60 which it guaranteed towards the association's special fund for establishing central playing grounds.

It was decided to hold a Christmas tournament to include intermediates as well as seniors and juniors. Matches between the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association and the Wellington Catholic Sub-Association, both senior and junior, were arranged for November 24. A letter from tlie Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association notified the issue of a challenge for the Nunneley Casket, the suggested dates being December 7 and 8. Syme, who v;as in the chair, outlined the history of the association from its inception in 1937 until the wartime interruption. Umpiring, he said, was an integral part of the game, and past experience had shown what a benefit organised umpiring could be to tournaments and other competitive events. He appealed to all players and clubs to support the organisation now that it was being reformed.
