INDONESIAN QUESTION
The New Zealand Federation of Labour, at its annual conference last week, supported, without discussion, the action taken by the national executive of the federation, together with representatives of the Waterside Workers' and Seamen's Unions, in the approach made to the Acting Prime Minister (Mr. Nash) in regard to the Indonesian question and their desire to obtain further information. The conference endorsed the executive's resolution, affirming the principle of self-government for all colonial peoples, and asking the Government to approach the British Government for the purpose of obtaining full information as to the position in the Netherlands East Indies, and if necessary to make representations to: the British Government to ensure that British forces were not used to defeat the legitimate aims of the Indonesian people for national independence and self-government.
The federation continued: "The New Zealand Federation of Labour also affirms its emphatic protest against any use of Japanese forces against the Indonesians or in conjunction with British or Allied forces for any military purpose whatsoever."
General satisfaction was expressed at yesterday's meeting of the North Island Motor Union when the Transport Department advised that it appeared certain that steel would be available next year for a fresh issue of number plates.
