AUCKLAND WHARVES
MR. BARNES TO RESIGN?
P.A. AUCKLAND, October 27. After being reinstated for a day, the waterside worker whose dismissal from the Glen Line vessel Denbighshire more than a fortnight ago resulted in j-a "go-slow" policy being adopted on all the chips in port, has again been ! dismissed. The timekeepers discovered that he and two others in his gang were not on the ship at 7 o'clock on Thursday night, and. the three men were replaced this morning. Shortly before 9 o'clock is the normal time .for ceasing work after the evening shift. The Waterfront Control. Commission foreman who originally dismissed the man for allegedly using abusive language is still at his job on the same part of the ship. • It was apparent today that the Auckland Waterside Workers' Union would not support the man after his second dismissal. Work proceeded normally on all ships, and no action has yet been taken by the union. It was reported today that the president of the union (Mr. H. Barnes) had tendered his resignation at an executive meeting. When asked if this was true Mr. Barnes said he had no statement to make, but added that he might say something at a later date. It is believed that Mr. Barnes's resignation has not yet been accepted by the executive, which has asked him to reconsider it. Mr. Barnes is also president of the New Zealand Waterside Workers' Union. He has been Avorking on the Denbighshire, but left the ship this morning, and a replacement was obtained.
in Wellington the chairman of the Waterfront Control Commission (Captain Price) said no da.o had been fixed for the conference, as the union had not yet applied to the Commission for it. The Commission was prepared to inquire into the union's grievances when an application was made.
