ASSAULTED A CHINESE

At 215 p.m. on Saturday Patrick Dennis McCarthy, labourer, 43, "went to ttie shop of a Chinese in Ghuznee Street, took a tulip from the doorway, and placed it in his coat, stated SubInspector J. Abel in the Magistrate s Court today. The Chinese asked for 6d tor the tulip but McCarthy refused to pay. He assaulted the" Chinese, whose tie he-pulled tight,-and a struggle followed. The two were on the floor when a civilian intervened. •McCarthy admitted the charge of assault and was sentenced to 14 days imprisonment by Mr. J. L. Stout S.M. He referred to the accused's record, including a previous charge of fighting, and added? "We must protect these innocent citizens."
