ATROCITY REPORTS
NEED FOR ACCURACY
Rec. 9 a.m. CANBERRA, October 12. The Navy Minister, Mr. Makin, referring to the report on September 20 of an interview with two New Zealand servicemen. Sgt. Peers and Pte. Brennan, regarding Japanese atrocities which later were stated by the two to be inaccurate, said: "It would be tragic if inaccuracies such as these undermined public confidence abroad in the official reports of these atrocities. It is hoped that in future publishers will take care to see that reports are confirmed, and any possibility of pinnaecuracy reduced to a minimum.
The report referred to was a cable received by the New Zealand Press Association from Brisbane, and distributed throughout New Zealand. The report was stated to be incorrect by the two men named when they arrived in Auckland. The report referred to by Mr. Makin was based on a statement published in Australia.
