JUNIOR CHAMBERS

CONVENTION PROCEEDINGS

P A. AUCKLAND, October 7. The second annual convention of the New Zealand Junior Chambers of Commerce was concluded in Auckland at the weekend. Consideration of remits occupied delegates throughout Saturday morning, and in the afternoon they were taken on a tour of the city and environs. 'A dance was held on Saturday evening and today there was an excursion to Motuihi. A remit from the Canterbury chamber recommending chambers throughout the country to undertake a project to assist and co-ordinate absorption into industry and commerce of crippled and handicapped persons was approved. It was stated that it was not intended to limit the scheme to servicemen, thotigh they would have prior consideration. If it was found that returned servicemen were entirely catered for the project would be directed toward other groups of handicapped persons. It was decided that Canterbury should investigate the scheme and report to the national directorate. The establishment of creches in each town in which the, junior chamber operates was suggested in a Hamilton remit, which was adopted. The. convention also approved remits from Wellington recommending that appropriate authorities should be requested to give greater prominence to the inculcation of civic pride and civic consciousness in primary and secondary schools, and that junior chambers should co-operate with other interested bodies in stressing that all war memorials should take the form of civic and social amenities.

The election of national officers for the ensuing year resulted: —President, Mr. A. E. Tarrant, Wellington; vicepresidents, Messrs. A. C. Halligan, Dunedin, and P. B. Watts, Canterbury.
