PLEDGE HONOURED

PILGRIMAGE TO CRETE

A party of New Zealand troops, together with British, Australian, and Greek soldiers and sailors, is making a pilgrimage to Crete in honour of the pledge that one day the Allies would return and to pay their respects to the memory of their comrades who fell in defence of the island against the Germans in 1941. . General Freyberg has informed the Minister of Defence (Mr. Jones) that the party left Naples on H.M.S. Ajax on Thursday afternoon and was due at Suda Bay, Crete, on Saturday. The New Zealand contingent of 100 of all ranks includes 50 officers and men who served in Crete, a guard of honour from the Maori Battalion, and the band of the sth New Zealand Infantry Brigade. The programme provided for a memorial service at the war cemetery, Suda Bay, yesterday, the New Zealand senior chaplains conducting Protestant and Catholic memorial services with a Maori choir assisting, and for four large and 20 small wreaths to be laid, including wreaths on behalf of the 2nd N.Z.E.F. and the Government and people of New Zealand.
