EPSOM TO SHANNON
PLACING TO HIGH PLAY

SYDNEY, Sepember 29
A crowd of approximately 78,000 at Randwick saw the favourites win the Epsom Handicap and A.J.C. Derby. With a mighty run Shannon snatched victory, in the last few yards of the Epsom. He has now won four races in a row. Adjudged before the race as the best of good things, Shannon pioved by his performance that with average luck tie would have won easily. However, hf> had the hardest of races. He was badly away and only eleventh at the halfmile From then on he was off the course and came down the outside in the straight under extreme pressure to win by half a neck from the outsider Melhero and the third favourite i Silent. j The second favourite. Immediate, was a close fourth The New Zealander bounced right out at the barrier and was going just as well as Puffhain and Bragger, who set a fast pace in front. Immediate was in front In She last furlong, but wilted a little towards the close. His fourth placing .was anything but a disgrace. With tlnj race run to suit him, Magnificent scored a decisive win in the Derby from the rank outsiders Guiding Light and Cavalero. It was a muddling race, in which there was much interference, and the test was completely Inconclusive from a staying angle. Magniftcent's jockey, the Victorian 11. The stewards reported that Heather's carelessness nearly brought down half the Derby field in the first furlong. , High Play made a game bid to win the Squatters' Handicap, but was beaten by the staying find of the season.
