SUCCESS OF KAITOA

LOWRY MEMORIAL

STAKES TO SHINING RING

(Special to "The Post.")

PALMERSTON N., This Day.

The weather was showery for the Hawke's Bay Spring Meeting, but the course, though slow, was in splendid order after rain during the week. There was a large attendance, and the totalisator handled £44,086, compared with £39,959 last year. • Blue Title won the Hollycombe Hurdles by half a dozen lengths from Gayj ax and Nightward, the last-named finishing too well for Renascor;. Renascor was the favourite, and he was going well until he hit the fourth fence. From there on he was under pressure. Blue Title, went up to take on Gay jax six furlongs from home and, jumping brilliantly, he was well clear at the last fence. Cauda Lux fell at the third fence.

, Battle Survey was backed down to' less than evens for the Flaxmere Hack Handicap. He won by. over a length, but the issue was well clouded halfway down the straight, where Buldana, Sir Wina, Sorrel, Piko Piko, Mr. Valiant, and Walk Off were stretched across the course. Under pressure, Battle Survey ■gamely responded to win from Piko Piko, who beat Walk Off by half a length. The fast-finish-ing Mr. Valiant was fourth, with Sir Wina next. .

The Imperial Plate was run in divisions. There was a thrilling finish in the first, when Rangiriri, Merciful, and French Count went past the post almost in line. Amuri, Rangiriri, Tracer, Merciful, and Gold Lad were in close order at the home turn. Rangiriri then went to the front with Merciful challenging, but French Count swept up on the outer to share the honours with Rangiriri, a head in front of Merciful. Gay Stroller finished well for fourth, ahead of Gold Lad. In the second division, El Santo and Bonny Crown were the early pacemakers, but El Santo, led into the straight ahead of Tahli, who had gone up fast. Tahli soon had complete charge, and he won well by two lengths from Night Foe, with three lengths to Blue Moon, who was ahead of Gay Senorita, El Santo, and Smile. :

The Lowry Memorial Handicap was an interesting race, the field being well bunched as they ran for the straight. In the. run home Kaitoa drew out and finished strongly to win by two lengths from Capronella, with Aqueduct a 1 length further back. Rakanui was in front early, but soon gave way to High Ideal, and at the five-furlong post High Ideal was in the van with Kaitoa, and then came Rakanui, Capronella, Patu Po, Aqueduct, and Magnus Lux. Kaitoa was with High Ideal as they turned for home, and he. finished too well for Capronella and Aqueduct. Magnux Lux was fourth, followed by High Ideal, Catterick Bridge, and Glenfalloch. SHOWED GREAT SPEED. The Ringmaster—Burnished filly Shining Ring scored impressively from Kirstymac in the Hastings Stakes. She and Kirstymac were first away ahead of Richmond Park, Omit, Signatory, Willow, Keening, Morocco, Scottish Maid, Bulaselle, and Opulent, and they were well clear when they turned for home, with Omit nearest of the others. Shining Ring had the measure of Kirstynac a furlong from the line, and she won very attractively by three lengths. Kirstymac was a similar margin in front of Omit, with another length to Richmond Park. Next to finish were Willow, Opulent. Richmond Park, and Morocco. A great finishing run landed Silver Rod a decisive winner of the Glenaray Hack Handicap. He was well back all the way, but started to move through a couple of furlongs from home, and he won going away by two lengths from Dark Morning, with Magic Art over a length away third. Turning into ,the back, Silver Crest was ahead of Provider, with Takrouna, Ritz, Sporting Way, Well Armed, arid Blackwater next in the order. Roto Pafera moved up at the five to join Silver Crest as they ran to the straight, with Dark Morning, Sporting Way, Takroiina, and Silver Rod following. However, Silver Rod then came through on the rails to win decisively. Silver Crest was fourth, being followed by Sporting Way, Blackwater, and Cinna Bay. HELD ON NARROWLY. A brilliant run by Lord Coronach was the feature of the Flying Handi- j cap. He was well back-early, but went up fast from the half-mile to be with Kol Ragi, and ahead of, Skyhawk, Lord Theio, arid Colais turning for home. Lord Coronach soon drew away in the straight, and although his run petered out just short of the post he lasted long enough to get the decision from Lord Theio .by a head. Skyhawk was over a length away third. Kol Ragi was fourth, being followed by Colais and Sir Wina.

Tussock, winner of the concluding event, paid a sensational dividend of over half a century. Treasure Tee, Wayside, Fame Bian, Tussock, and Matador began well to be prominent to the straight, where Fame Bian was in theleadhalf-way down the running. Wayside issued a challenge, which was

followed by one from Treasure Tee, and the latter appeared to have the race won when Tussock swept up to win going away by half a length. Wayside, who was checked half a furlong from home, finished on for third, a length and a half away, and Citation was a close fourth. W. J. Broughton finished' the day with a tantalising sequence of four seconds. THE DETAILED RESULTS.
