"WORSE THAN EVER"
COAL FOR RAILWAYS
The coal position of the railways was worse than ever, said Mr. W. Sullivan (National, Bay of Plenty), speaking in the Financial Debate in the House of Representatives last night. He believed, he said, that the railway supply was sufficient for only three to six days; he know also that industry was living -from hand to mouth for its .coal supply, and he suggested that it ■ was the Government's duty to deal with the problem and not fritter away time in criticising private enterprise. The Government had gone in for purchase and control of mines, and the people were led to expect an abundance of coal and no strikes. The balance-sheets of State coal mines showed constant losses, and it should be known that all coal production was subsidised on a tonnage basis at a cost of £.350,000 a year.
