LONDON-NEW ZEALAND
"We freely admit that with all the developments in radio we cannot get through to New Zealand via Sydney under the present conditions," stated an official of the Overseas Telephone Service in London. "We are going through a period in which radio conditions are bad all over the world, and it depends on how long this lasts as to when we talk direct to New Zealand."
SERVICE NOT OPERATING (Special P.A. Correspondent.) Rec. 10.30 a.m. LONDON, Sept. 12. Although it was announced here that the telephone service to NeAv Zealand had reopened, there is in fact no service- in operation and no certainty when it will start. A direct link to Sydney is operating, but the hook-up over the Tasman to New Zealand is at present not workable owing to bad radio conditions.
Asked why a direct link could not be made with New Zealand, the official said: "That question is being considered. It is a matter of higher policy."
