CARTER OBSERVATORY
NEW DIRECTOR APPOINTED
With the appointment of Mr. I. L. Thomsen as director, in succession to the late Mr. Murray Geddes, it is anticipated that the Carter Observatory at Kelburn will soon be in working order again..
Much depended, said Mr. W. F. Coppin, secretary to the Board of Trustees, today, as to when the new director would be released by the Navy, in wJhich he has been on special duty for some :time.
Mr.' Thomsen was born in Dannevirke in 1910. He was educated at the High School there, and at Victoria University College. In 1928 he joined the Department ■of Agriculture, and
the following year he transferred to the Dominion Observatory. In 1939 he was appointed assistant astronomer and secretary-treasurer to the Carter Observatory Board, in which positions he remained until he went on war service.
Mr. Thomsen acted as Government, astronomer with New Zealand parties observing the eclipses of the sun at Pukekohe in December, 1936, and at Canton Island on June 8, 1937. He is the author of several scientific papers, and was editor of the New Zealand Astronomical Society's journal. He is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, an honorary member of the Tasmanian Astronomical Society, and was chairman of the astronomical section of the Royal Society of New Zealand from 1933 until 1938.
