AROUND TRIESTE
TERRITORIAL GRAB
PETITION BUILT BY THREATS
LONDON, September 11
It is announced at Allied headquarters in Italy that threats, bribes, and various other forms of pressure are being used to obtain signatures for a petition which has been.widely circulated among the mixed Italian and Slovene population of the Venezia Giulia and nearby districts in northeast Italy. ~~
A correspondent says there are two versions of the petition, one in Italian and the other in the Slovene tongue, and they differ widely. The Italian version asks only for support of the demand that Trieste should be united with Yugoslavia in the form of an autonomous city. The Slovene version demands the union with Yugoslavia not only of Trieste, but of an area which takes in the whole of the province o£ Venezia Giulia and a considerable amount of Italian territory to the west. Six persons have been arrested in Allied-controlled territory for using threats to obtain signatures.
