WESTLAND SAWMILL STRIKE
P.A. GREYMOUTH, September 11
Th 2 Westland timber mills remained idle today, there being no sign of settlement. The coal mines may close before the end of the week for lack of timber.
Mr. Turley, the secretary of the union, in reply to the Minister (Mr. O'Brien) said today that the Nelson conference was not what was expected by the union, whose delegates, found the whole question handed to Mr. Seed, of the Sawmillers' Association, who had said the employers would not deal with the Westland union separately. When the Westland delegates returned the union members l-efused to wait for the further proposed conference. They were demanding settlement of the wetpa; question. Mr. W. Robertson, chairman of the Westland Sawmillers' Association, wrote to the union saying that the association would adhere to the decision of the Nelson conference to hold a further conference at Nelson on September 14, and regretting the union's precipitate action,
