PRISONERS SENTENCED
''You have had, if I might put it so. a very fair spin from the Courts/ said Mr. Justice Finlay in the Supreme Court yesterday to Stanley Richard Bent farmhand, who appeared for sentence on three charges of breaking, entering and theft. After discussing Bent's previous convictions, his Honour said that it had to be made plain to the prisoner that offences of breaking and entering ■were disturbing to the community and would not be countenanced. A sentence of thi-ee years' imprisonment with hard labour was imposed. Hiha Nuia Makaore, who also appeared for sentence on three charges of breaking, entering and theft, was sentenced to two years' reformative detention.
Eileene Andrews, cleaner, was sentenced to three months' hard labour on a charge of theft from her employers. In refusing counsel's plea for probation, his Honour said that, quite apart from the breach of trust, suspicion had been thrown upon a great many innocent people. Merlyn Gustav Prebble Sodersten. who had pleaded guilty, at Gisborne. to a charge of breaking, entering and theft, was sentenced to 18 months' reformative detention. It was a very difficult case in view of the prisoner's condition, said his Honour, but he would make arrangements that the prisoner be given suitable treatment while undergoing his sentence.
