RHODES SCHOLARSHIPS

TWO FOR SERVICEMEN

The Rhodes Trustees have advised the secretary of the selection committee for New Zealand of their intention to award two special Rhodes Scholarships before the end of the present year, says an announcement by the University of New Zealand. Applica- j tions Cor 'these scholarships will be ac-. cepted only from those who have performed at least one full year ot mooilised dpfence service, or such other special service as may be approved by the New Zealand Committee, and by the trustees. Though it is probable that under New Zealand conditions most of the applicants will be graduates, the trustees are prepared to accept candidates with shorter university experience, down to the absolute minimum of one year. Candidates must also have been within the age limits of 1!) and 25 at some point of time in the period from September 1, 1939, to October 31, 11945. In other respects ihe usual prewar conditions apply. Consideration is being given to academic attainments, manly qualities, moral force, and physical vigour, in that order. So that awards may be made within the required time, applications must reach the registrars of the university colleges of New Zealand not later than October 31. In order that men in the services may have the best possible opportunity of applying, wherever they may be, the directors of the Defence Educational Services have sent special orders to all units of the services. The University has arranged that application forms shall be available immediately from the University and the various university colleges in New Zealand; from the R.N.Z.A.F. liaison officer at base, air forces. S.E.A., New Delhi; j assistant director, E.R.S. headquarters, 2nd N.Z.E.F.. C.M.F.; and from the Uniiversity agent at the office of the High Commissioner for New Zealand in London.
