Between 1 a.m. and 9 a.m. today,, the Fire Brigade dealt with three fires in the city and suburbs. *Iwo of the outbreaks were fairly serious and in these the firemen made good saves". Two machines from Central and one from Thorndon answered a call to 194 Sydney Street West, at 1.3 a.m. A cigarette butt had set fire to a mattress, which was destroyed. Bucket pumps were used to put out the fire. Considerable damage was done to the work-bench, motor accessories, and some paint, when fire broke out in the factory of R. H. Sly, motor-body builders, Aro Street, early this morning, Four machines from Central and one from Brooklyn answered the summons and put the fire out with one lead of hose. • At 9.5 a.m. a call was received from the caretaker of the Miramar Golf Club, who reported an outbreak in. l the clubhouse. Four machines from Central, two from Constable Street;* one from Miramar, and one from the Rorigotai airport, answered the call;. Extensive damage was done to the washhouse and boiler-room, and conveniences. The outbreak is believed to have been caused by embers from the copper, which was burning rubbish. An excellent save was made by the Brigade. A small fire caused by flying sparks from welding torches broke out yesterday in the forward part of the trawler Phyllis, which is under repair on the Wellington Patent Slip. Welders were working on the side of , the trawler and the strong wind carried some sparks to the forepeak, where highly inflammable material was stored. The fire was brought under control by firemen, who were armed with foam extinguishers. Slight damage was done to paint, tarred net? ting, and other shipping accessories. An outbreak of fire in the surrounding shrubbery did considerable damage to a number of pine trees behind the Newtown Zoo last evening. Two fire engines from Constable Street answered the call at about 7 p.m., and found that the dry foliage was ablaze and carrying the fire to the pines. The outbreak was extinguished before serious damage was done.
