POSTHUMOUS V.C.
BRITISH MAJOR'S ACT IN
ITALY
LONDON, September 1,
His Majesty has approved of a posthumous award of the Victoria Cross to Major A. F. Lassen, M.C., for a successful night attack in Italy last April, when a small patrol, which he commanded, fighting against heavy odds, wiped out three positions, accounted for six machine-guns, killed eight of the enemy, and wounded others, and took two prisoners. Major Lassen was hit in the final attack by a burst of spiaidau fire, but even while falling mortally wounded he flung grenades, wounding some of the occupants of the position, and enabling his patrol to dash in. Major Lassen refused to be evacuated, because he said that would impede withdrawal, and as their ammunition was nearly exhausted, the force had to leave without him.
