FATE OF HITLER
DIFFERENCE OF OPINION
NEW YORK, September 8,
American officials who have been seeking evidence of Hitler's fate are convinced that he is dead, says the "New York Times" correspondent in Washington. The British are also convinced.
British intelligence officers, the correspondent says, have denied reports that Hitler has been seen in the British zone, and it is not true that they are making: a special search for Hitler. The Russians, however, continue to intimate that he may be alive, hut the suggestion is not backed by evidence.
The Americans have uncovered enough evidence to show that several attempts were made on Hitler's life. [An Associated Press correspondent said yesterday that British security police were investigating strong rumours that Hitler and his deputy, Bormann had been seen in Hamburg. A recent broadcast was allegedly picked up in Sweden from Bormann. It declared that Hitler was alive and in good health in Germany.] The Lord Mayor of Berlin, Dr. Karl Maron said today that he believed Hitler was alive. He added that it had been proved that none of the five bodies found near the Chancellery shelter was Hitler's.
