SOUTHERN TYROL
AUSTRIA ASKS FOR RETURN Rec. 10 a.m. VIENNA. Sept. 8.
The Renner Government, has sent a memorandum to the Allied Commission requesting the return to Austria of the southern Tyrol, which was ceded to Italy after the last war, and asked that a memorandum should be forwarded to the meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers in London.
The Government has suggested that a. plebiscite should be held in the disputed area, of which Bolzano and Merano are the largest towns, arguing that the "present state of reconstruction makes it possible to right a wrong done earlier, especially in view of the fact that the strategical considerations which were then decisive no longer exist."
