AWARDS TO AIRMEN

POLAR EXPLORATION FLIGHT

LONDON, September 7. When the Lancaster "Aries" set out last May on the first exploratory flight by the"R.A.F. to the North Pole, the automatic pilot failed shortly after the departure from the base, and the long and successful flight was accomplished almost entirely under manual control. The captain of the plane, Wing Commander D. C. McKinley. has now been awarded a bar to his AFC. He was the pilot who last October led the good-will flight to New Zealand and Australia. Four other members of the crew receive the A.F.C. or the A.F.M., and the remainder are commended.
