EDUCATIONAL VALUES
Sir, —I have been greatly struck with the conflict of views on the question of university education between the Labour Government in New Zealand and the new Labour Government in Great Britain. In Britain a large number of the Cabinet are university men, and in general, a university education is considered a desirable thing. In New Zealand, however, I find that speaker after speaker from the Government benches speaks with scorn of university trained men and usually to a chorus of applause, and a majority of New Zealanders appear to think with them. In view of the heavy cost to a country of maintaining a university, it seems to me that if you have any consistency in your Government, it will close up your university, and use the money saved for recreational or social purposes.—l am, etc.,
